Betty L. Penniston

Age 87 of Monroe, died Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at the home of her daughter. Betty was born on April 3, 1931 in Clarno Township, the daughter of Everett E. and Della Pearl (Weckerly) Montgomery. She graduated from Argyle High School in 1949 and attended Brown's Business College in Freeport, IL. She married Robert J. Penniston on September 16, 1950. She was employed with Watkins Products, Swiss Colony and later was secretary for Monroe Specialty Co., Certified Cars Corp and Kraft Foods in Monroe. Betty was the secretary and bookkeeper for her husband's carpentry business for 35 years. She was a member of Monroe United Methodist Church and the Peace and Friendship Circle. She was a past member of ABC Homemakers Club, Pythian Sisters serving as past chief and pianist for 23 years. She enjoyed going to auctions, collecting antique dishes, playing cards, doing crossword puzzles, playing her keyboard and autoharp, watching soap operas, and listening to Gospel and Country music.

She is survived by two children, John (Gwen) Penniston, and Carol (Guy) Calkins; grandson, Brandon (Hannah) Penniston; granddaughter, Holly (Michael) Williams, five great grandchildren, Rylee, Jaxson, Annabelle, Addison, and Braydon, all of Monroe. She is also survived by her brother, Gene (Joan) Montgomery of South Wayne; sisters-in-law, Dorothy and Joanne Montgomery; and her beloved dog, Duke.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert, on January 30, 2016; two brothers, Robert and Everett; and a sister, Janet Kay who died in infancy.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, August 10, 2018, at 11:00 a.m., at the Monroe United Methodist Church with Reverend Randy Booth officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Argyle. Visitation will be at the church on Friday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials are suggested in Betty's name to the Monroe UMC, or the Celiac Disease or Diabetes Associations. The Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe, is assisting the family.
