Obituary

Marvin K. Lien, age 68, a resident of Naperville, IL since 1999, formerly of Monroe, WI and Kennewick, WA, passed away on Friday, April 5, 2024 at his home. He was born on September 28, 1955, in Monroe, WI.

Marvin is survived by his beloved wife, Cathy L. Lien (nee Goerlitz), whom he married in 1976; his mother-in-law, Betty Goerlitz of Monroe; a sister-in-law, Debra (Brian) Fell of Buffalo Grove, IL; nieces and nephews, Susan (Bill) Rendahl, John Johnson and Amy and Alex Fell; a great-niece, Kim Rendahl; and several cousins and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Kermit and Mabel (nee Hanson) Lien; his sister, Rosann Johnson; and his father-in-law, Anton Goerlitz.

Marvin grew up in Monroe, WI, was a 1973 graduate of Monroe High School, and received an associate's degree from The Wisconsin School of Electronics, in Madison, WI to become an electronics technician and draftsman. He was self-taught on computer programming, and this was something he was very good at. Marvin programmed the computer to have the microscope count cells for research and did drawings for circuit boards and wiring for projects on the accelerators. The computer programming, circuit boards and wiring were done at Battelle NW Labs in Richland, WA and also at Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, IL. Marvin's career always involved high energy electronic accelerators and his group at Battelle developed the radiation dosimeter for NASA's Space Shuttles.

Marvin enjoyed water skiing and boating on the Columbia and Snake River, in Washington State. He also enjoyed snow skiing in the Washington State Mountains, scuba diving, and was a private pilot when living in Washington.

Private graveside services will be held at Greenwood Cemetery, Monroe, at a later date.
