Patrick H. Draney
Patrick H. Draney, age 89 of Monroe, died Thursday, August 22, 2013 at Pleasant View Nursing Home. Patrick was born September 21, 1923 in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Walter and Thekla (Egen) Draney. After the deaths of his parents at age seven, Patrick was raised by his uncle, Dr. Lother Egen in Hastings, Nebraska.
Patrick graduated from Hastings High School, and attended the University of Washington. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln and received his Masters degree in Education from the University of Missouri.
He entered the U.S. Air Corps in January, 1943, served as a pilot, and was honorably discharged in January, 1946. After his discharge, he married Joan Able in Hastings, Nebraska. Patrick and Lois (Robertson) Pickett were married on October 14, 1958 in Miami, Oklahoma.
Patrick managed Montgomery Ward stores in Madison and Monroe from 1953-1957. After moving to Kansas City, he managed the Katz Drug Store until 1962. He then worked for the Kansas City-Hickman Mills School District as an educator for twenty-one years, and also coached tennis. After retiring in 1984, Patrick and his wife, Lois, travelled throughout Europe for a year. They then lived in Daytona Beach, Florida for seven years, and have resided in Monroe since 1992.
He loved history, was an avid reader, and had a passion for planning trips and travelling. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and sailing. Patrick was a Mason, and a member of the Royal Neighbors of America.
Surviving is his wife, Lois Draney of Monroe; daughters, Susan (Greg) Harnden of Searcy, Arkansas, Patricia (Don) Malotte of Sedalia, Colorado, Pamela (Michael) Zanders of Leawood, Kansas, Cynthia Rogers of Kansas City, Missouri; step-sons, Dennis (Hollie) Pickett, and William (Susan) Pickett, both of Monroe; twelve grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; uncle; and brothers, Richard Draney of Chicago, IL and Walter Draney of Kansas City, MO.
There will be no visitation or funeral service. A luncheon will be held for family and friends to remember Patrick on Monday, August 26, from 11:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the Monroe Moose Lodge. A memorial fund will be established in his name for the Monroe Public Library. The Newcomer Funeral Home, Monroe, is assisting the family.
